Cora frustrated with Red Sox’ lack of spending?
On Monday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Michael Holley and Ryan Johnston wonder why the Red Sox stopped spending money.
Questioning Red Sox Ownership
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Michael Holley: For the Red Sox it’s been six years since their last parade. And it feels like it will be another 60 years before we see another one.
Alex Cora wants to be part of the old Red Sox regime—that money-spending team we’re all used to. Many of us have watched the Red Sox win and compete. Even when they weren’t winning, they were trying to win. They were at least trying to make trades.
Whether it’s Craig Breslow, Chaim Bloom, or the next person to replace Breslow, it doesn’t matter. The buck stops at John Henry.
John Henry is like the guy who died came back, and was like, “Death wasn’t so bad.” The Sox finished in last place. And then they won the year after. I think he compared the bottom lines and realized they made money in both seasons.
So he’s probably thinking, like, “Why am I spending so much money? I can make money regardless, of whether we win the championship or we’re in the middle of the pack or last place. I’m still going to make money, so I’m not going to invest like I used to.”
Ryan Johnston: Yeah, and Cora had to leave. He was gone for, you know, the COVID-shortened year. But then, you brought him back. Why did you bring him back? Especially, if the Red Sox don’t care enough to put a better product on the field.
The year he came back, they made the playoffs, and since then they have been sub .500 every year. And now, surprisingly, they are here. They’re in contention for a wild card spot, but nobody expected them to be doing that when the calendar turned to July.
So, I mean, you certainly can get cheaper managers than Alex Cora. Like, why do they pay him to shepherd along a team that they don’t care if they finished above .500 or not?
