Patriots release offensive lineman, opening up roster spot
On Monday afternoon the New England Patriots released guard Ryan Johnson.
The New England Patriots now have an open roster spot as the NFL offseason enters its quiet period. On Monday, the team opened up a roster spot with the release of offensive guard Ryan Johnson.
Johnson, 23, was signed by the Patriots as a UDFA after the draft. After starting at right guard for Youngstown state over the past four years, Johnson worked at guard and center for the Patriots this spring.

Based on the spring, Johnson looked to be competing for a depth/practice squad role on the interior offensive line. After center David Andrews projected starter Sidy Sow the Patriots’ interior offensive line spots are seemingly all up for grabs between Jake Andrews, Michael Jordan, Atonio Mafi, Nick Leverett, and rookies Layden Robinson and Charles Turner III. Cole Strange is expected to miss the start of the year due to a knee injury.
With Johnson’s release the Patriots now have one open roster spot. They could look to add another veteran offensive lineman (we looked at some options here) or address another position with thinner depth such as running back, edge rusher, safety, or kicker.
