Albert Breer: Patriots could trade out of 3rd overall pick
On Friday’s Toucher & Hardy radio program, Albert Breer described why the New England Patriots must identify and pick the correct quarterback prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft.
What Should Pats Do With 3rd Overall Pick?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Toucher: So, there’s these three quarterbacks at the top of the NFL Draft. People say you’ve got to take a quarterback, but you disagree. What’s your take on?
Albert Breer: I’ve used that art and science thing a few times in the last few weeks. So I think the science to it says to take a quarterback. You can’t guarantee you’ll be up that high in the draft. The probability of getting it right in that part of the draft is much higher than in another part. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
The numbers tell us not all three of those guys will make it. As highly thought of as everybody thinks of them now, the numbers say that not all three of them will make it. The art of the decision is identifying which one’s the one.
Recent history tells us that the teams that have gotten that guy had to make a trade be bad the year before. It’s also that those teams identified the guy. Right? The Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes as the second quarterback picked in that draft, the 10th pick overall. And the Chiefs moved up 17 spots to get him. They identified him.
The Buffalo Bills identified Josh Allen. He was the third quarterback taken in that draft. They felt he was the best quarterback, so they moved up from somewhere in the middle of the first round. I think they went from the 21st pick to the 12th to the seventh to get him. So Buffalo identified him.
The Baltimore Ravens identified Lamar Jackson. They traded up and got him at the bottom of the first round. I think he was the fifth quarterback in his draft class. And he went 32nd overall.
Then you, of course, have Joe Burrow. The Cincinnati Bengals got him because they were the worst team in the league. And Burrow had that coming out season.
Jaguars same thing. They were the worst team in the league. They identified Trevor Lawrence.
I think once you get past that first overall pick, what history tells us, is that the teams that have been able to get guys outside of the first pick are the ones that are really good at identifying them. So you must identify if Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye is the guy. Chances are that they both won’t be. Maybe one or the other will be the guy. Who knows?
Plus, you have to have some balls. If the guy you identify doesn’t fall to you, you might have to pick the other guy. The right thing to do might be to trade out.
There’s nothing worse than getting it wrong. If you get it wrong as a third overall, you’ve not only got that wrong, but you’ve probably taken yourself out of the quarterback market for the next three years. And you’re going to get everybody fired.
