Bruins insider Fluto Shinzawa: Florida goal should have been overturned
This morning on the Toucher & Hardy radio program, Fred Toucher and Fluto Shinzawa from theAthletic.com discussed the Boston Bruins’ loss to the Florida Panthers. They focused on Sam Bennett’s game-tying goal, which involved clear interference with Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman by sending Charlie Coyle into him. Fluto mentioned that it was a tough call and suggested that some referees might have penalized Bennett for a cross-check on Coyle during the power play. He also pointed out that the Bruins needed some lucky breaks to stay competitive in the game, expressing disappointment that they didn’t get any favorable calls during the match.

Fred Toucher: Hey, it’s a pleasure to talk to you. Okay. What are your thoughts about that? I’m just going to give you the floor. What are your thoughts about last night?
Fluto Shinzawa: Well, that’s a goal overturned all day, excuse me, a penalty all day. You could call it a penalty too. Oh, if some refs wouldn’t be out of line in terms of calling Sam Bennett for a cross-check on Charlie Coyle on the power play. And then you look at the play, you hear what Jeremy Swayman and Charlie Coyle and Jim Montgomery said. What was the goalie supposed to do? You’ve got a big man in Charlie Coyle, six foot three, 220 pounds. He’s on top of his right pad. He can’t get over because he’s been knocked into Jeremy by about it. And I guess the league rules that okay. It happened so quickly that if the impediment hadn’t been in place, Jeremy still wouldn’t have had time to get over there to stop the shot. That’s a tough call. So, hey, the Panthers are up 3 to 1. They deserve to be up 3 to 1. The Bruins needed some breaks to be competitive. And they didn’t get any last night. And we haven’t even talked about Sam Bennett on the Bread Machine.
