Breer: Hard to get upset about Stevenson extension
On Friday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Bert Breer joined the show to give his reaction on the new Rhamondre Stevenson deal.
Rhamondre Stevenson Extended
Fred Toucher: Your New England Patriots—it’s very exciting—have signed Rhamondre Stevenson. People will say, “Why do it? He’s a running back.”
It’s a four-year, $36 million extension. I’ve heard Andrew Callahan say, “Why not?”
They have all this money, also, they can get out of it at a certain point. What are your feelings on the Rhamondre Stevenson deal?
Bert Breer: Yeah, I don’t mind it. It’s one of those things where running backs have become so devalued that they almost become a value. If you look at like what Christian McCaffrey is making right now, he got a bump, but his contract was $16,000,000 per year. Think about how much he affects the 49ers.
I’m going to pull up the receivers right now who are making that much. We’re now talking about receivers that make $16,000,000 a year. Tyler Lockett, Jerry Jeudy, Christian Kirk and Courtland Sutton. Who would you rather have? You know?
So then let’s go down to what Rhamondre Stevenson is making. He’s got the same contract. Marvin Harrison Jr. is going to make that on his rookie contract. I mean, JuJu Smith-Schuster is making $9 million a year.
Jon Wallach: I mean, that’s just embarrassing.
Breer: Adam Thielen is making that much on his last legs. Mike Williams is making a little bit more than that with the Jets on a make-good deal. Brandon Cooks on the very back end of his career with the Cowboys is making that much.
The question becomes, “What are we talking about here?” The philosophical part of this is like, don’t pay a running back, which I get because they are replaceable. But when a guy’s important to your team’s identity and what you’re trying to build in the locker room, it’s hard to get upset about $9 million a year.
