Alex Cora could leave Red Sox for Yankees job
On Friday’s Zolak & Bertrand program, the guys discuss Alex Cora’s contract situation, and whether he would leave to manage the New York Yankees next season.
Could Cora Go to Yankees?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Zolak: So bottom line, the superstar from the first half of the year is Alex Cora. He’s gotten this team to believe, play well, and step on the gas. They don’t leave anything out there. I
I think Cora knows, based on past trade deadlines, that they could leave him hanging. Everybody thinks, why would you let the manager enter the final year of a contract? He’s a dead man walking.
You’re the Boston Red Sox and letting a good manager go to the final season of the year without an extension?
Mazz thinks they may have offered him one already. It’s on him to potentially get out there and know what sort of money he can get on the market. And maybe even go to like the New York Yankees. Remember how bad it was when Johnny Damon went there?
Michael Holley: That was a different era though, right?
Zolak: But this is a manager, though, it’s not a player. You know what I mean?
Holley: Is that worse? It’s almost worse.
Zolak: If you lose him then you’re back to the to the data nerds. Cora is sort of an anti-data guy.
Holley: I don’t know if he’s an anti-data guy, per se. He just doesn’t want to buy into it completely. But the last two years at the deadline, they’ve given Cora no help!
Zolak: And how about this offseason too? They gave him what we thought was a mediocre roster to start the season.
Holley: He’s come around on this roster. Unprompted, he always talks about athleticism and the youth on this team. He thinks they haven’t gone into any long-losing streaks this year because of the athleticism.
But he would go to the Yankees because…?
Zolak: Money.
Holley: Well, would it be money, or would it be their willingness to compete for a championship?
Zolak: It’d probably be both.
Holley: I think the Red Sox must show him something for him to want to stay.
