Swayman Faces Uncertainty as Linus Ullmark’s Future with Boston Bruins Remains Unclear
Fred Toucher asked Jim McBride about the potential impact on Jeremy Swayman if Linus Ullmark remains with the Bruins next season. Fred noted that Swayman and Ullmark are close friends but questioned whether Swayman, being a competitive athlete, would feel disappointed if Ullmark stayed. Jim McBride responded that, professionally, Swayman would likely be disappointed, although he might not admit it outside his inner circle. McBride mentioned that while Swayman would publicly support a scenario where he and Ullmark work together due to their tight relationship, he would still have the desire to be the primary goaltender, especially considering his age and career stage. McBride added that if Ullmark stays, Swayman might feel like the team doesn’t see him as the number one goalie, despite his strong performance and the challenge of competing with Ullmark, who won the Vezina Trophy last year.

Fred Toucher: [00:00:00] I know Swayman and Ullmark are really good friends, but do you think if Ullmark stayed around next season, that would be disappointing for Swayman? Because Swayman, you know, being a competitor, wants to be the goaltender for this team? [00:00:14]
Jim McBride: [00:00:14] Yeah, professionally, definitely. I don’t think he would ever admit it to anyone outside maybe his inner circle that he was disappointed in that. But, talking to us, he would say, you know, I’d always envision a scenario where he and Linus work together because they are so tight. But yeah, I think psychologically and professionally, yeah, you want to be that guy, and he’s 25 and this is his time. So, I think if, you know, if Linus stays, then he’s going to have that thought in the back of his mind. And then maybe they don’t think I’m the number one, which, you know, he clearly is, which isn’t an easy thing to say when you’re competing against a guy who won the Vezina last year. [00:00:14]
