Altercation involving San Jose Mayor’s security team captured on video
A downtown San Jose incident led to a physical altercation between San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan’s security team and a pedestrian near 55 S 1st St. Mahan was at a restaurant opening and being interviewed by KRON4 during the incident.
Video footage captured the escalation into a physical confrontation, including the pedestrian punching the security officer.

At the start of the video, the pedestrian engages in a verbal exchange with Mahan’s security detail, a San Jose Police Department officer. The situation turns physical, with the pedestrian threatening the officer.
The security officer sustains injuries and is hospitalized, while the suspect faces charges, including felony battery on a police officer. The incident’s motive is under investigation by SJPD.
Mahan’s office appreciates the response of the security team and SJPD, pointing out the need for de-escalation training for officers to create a safer city.
