Bill O’Brien Never Had A Chance
The Patriots will have a new offensive coordinator for the 4th consecutive season after Bill O’Brien has accepted the same role at Ohio State. I never liked the move and didn’t think it would fix Mac Jones. He was always suspect to me. When he was at Alabama you could look at the points per game and think it was a success. The Tide lost in the National Championship game and then failed to get to the playoff even with the Hiesman trophy winner Bryce Young. He also never won a Super Bowl with Tom Brady at quarterback. I would also like to add, he never won a championship as offensive coordinator for Bill Belichick or Nick Saban. He will now join Ryan Day and the Buckeyes who will get transfer Will Howard and a team looking to get past Michigan in the Big 10.
The Patriots offense was an absolute train wreck. In hindsight, once ownership got involved with the coaching staff O’Brien and Mac Jones has no chance. O’Brien and Jones had a relationship but never worked together at Alabama. Matt Patricia was removed from the position without Bill Belichick’s true consent and went with an option he was comfortable working with based of him previously being in New England.
Points scored by the offense, excludes points scored by the defense or special teams.

The Kraft’s wanted to get Jones back on track, Belichick was upset the previous season when Jones was calling other coaches looking for help. He soured on the former first round pick. He never mentioned Jones name until camp started. Jones was clearly the starter all through camp. Bailey Zappe, who started 3 games the previous season with some success didn’t win over O’Brien and couldn’t take the job away from Jones. He was a part of the final round of cuts. You know the rest of the story.
I’m sure O’Brien got the bad end of this. I am curious to see how Ohio State does next season with Ryan Day and O’Brien. I’ve heard O’Brien vacations in the same Cape Cod town that I do. If I see you around, I will buy you drink as combat pay.
