The Red Sox are on the board with their first major free agent signing
Interest has turned to action for the Boston Red Sox. On Friday night, the team made it’s first major free agency signing of the offseason.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Red Sox have signed 29-year-old right handed starting pitcher Lucas Giolito. Giolito was ranked the 18th-best free agent in baseball this year by MLB.com, and the seventh-ranked starting pitcher.

The sides agreed to a two-year, $38.5 million contract that includes an opt-out after 2024. Giolito’s 2024 salary will be $18 million. There is also an option for a third year in 2026. If Giolito throws under 140 innings in 2025 it’s a $14 million club option. If he goes over 140, it’s a $19 million mutual option with a $1.5 million buyout.
Giolito debuted with the Washington Nationals in 2016 pitching in six games, but was traded to the Chicago White Sox following the season. He spent the next six-plus years in Chicago, where he was an All-Star in 2019 and finished as a Cy Young finalist three years in a row from 2019-2021.
Last year Giolito began the season in Chicago before getting traded to the Los Angeles Angels just before the deadline. A month later he was waived by LA, and finished the season in Cleveland. In total, Giolito made an AL-leading 33 starts going 8-15 with a 4.88 ERA and 1.313 WHIP in 184.1 innings. He struck out 204 hitters while walking 73, and allowing an AL-high 41 home runs.
Now in Boston, Giolito joins Chris Sale and Brayan Bello in the Red Sox projected starting rotation, with Garrett Whitlock, Kutter Crawford, Nick Pivetta, and Tanner Houck potentially factoring in as well.
Whether or not the Red Sox will continue to add seems to be uncertain. In the post where he broke the news, Passan wrote “Boston lands its first big signing of the winter. The question now is: Will there be more?”
