Red Sox option pitcher to Triple-A ahead of series against Oakland
The Boston Red Sox made a minor transaction late on Monday ahead of their next series.
According to the Red Sox on X, they’ve optioned left-handed relief pitcher Cam Booser to Triple-A Worcester ahead of their three-game set against the Oakland Athletics at Fenway Park. The Sox had previously recalled Booser last week after placing reliever Chris Martin on the 15-day injured list.
As of this writing, there’s no word on a corresponding move on the major league roster. Martin isn’t eligible to come off the IL until after the All-Star break. Per MLB.com, righty Bryan Mata needs to be activated to the major league roster once healthy to avoid being designated for assignment, but isn’t expected back until mid-July. (UPDATE: the Red Sox are calling up righty Trey Wingenter to take Booser’s place. The Red Sox recently acquired Wingenter in a trade with the Tigers. In addition, the Red Sox called up utility man Jamie Westbrook from the WooSox and optioned Enmanuel Valdez to Worcester.)
Booser, 32, has been one of the more inspiring stories of the Red Sox’ suddenly promising 2024 season. He made his major league debut with Boston in April, after nine pro seasons in the minors and independent leagues from 2011-23. And he’s been pretty good, posting a 3.00 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 30 innings across 27 appearances in the majors.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Booser got the call-up again at some point this season. But for now, the Red Sox turn to the upcoming series against the lowly A’s, who have the fourth-worst record in the major leagues at 34-58. Oakland has scored the third-fewest runs in baseball, while allowing the sixth-most, so a sweep should be on the table for the surging Sox.
Boston is hoping to keep their momentum going from a series win over the New York Yankees in the Bronx, and carry that through the A’s series into a big three-game set against the Kansas City Royals. Entering Tuesday, the Red Sox hold a 1.5-game lead over the Royals for the third American League Wild Card spot, so their series at Fenway will carry legitimate playoff implications.

First pitch between the Red Sox and A’s on Tuesday night is set for 7:10 p.m. ET. Brayan Bello (8-5, 5.19 ERA) opposes Oakland’s Joey Estes (3-3, 4.39 ERA).
