  • The Red Sox have done it. They’ve finally, actually done it.

‘It’ in this case being keeping a young, homegrown player in town long-term. On Wednesday night, multiple MLB insiders reported the Red Sox and star third baseman Rafael Devers have agreed to an 11-year, $331 million contract with a $20 million signing bonus. Former MLB player Carlos Baerga was the first to report the news on Instagram.

  • According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the deal begins in 2024 and will keep Devers with the Red Sox through the end of the 2034 season, when he’ll be 37. Devers will play the 2023 season under the one-year, $17.5 million arbitration-avoiding deal he signed yesterday.

This deal comes as a bit of a surprise. Previous reporting over the last few weeks had indicated the two sides were far apart on getting a new contract done. In the wake of the team’s handling of Xander Bogaerts’ contract situation, many questioned the organization’s willingness to spend.

  • Devers, who was first signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent at the age of 16 in 2013, has finished in the top 15 of the AL MVP voting in three of the last four seasons, with the 2020 Pandemic-shorted season the lone exception. He was named a Silver Slugger in 2021 and was an All Star in both 2021 and 2022.

With Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez both having left in free agency, Devers figures to be the player not only the lineup, but organization will build around going forwards. He’s one of just three players left from the Red Sox most recent championship run in 2018, along with Matt Barnes and Ryan Ryan Brasier.
