Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers will skip next week's MLB All-Star Game due to an injury.

Over the weekend, Major League Baseball announced the Boston Red Sox would have three players representing the team at the 2024 MLB All-Star Game. However, only two of those players will take part in the game itself.

On Tuesday, manager Alex Cora told reporters that third baseman Rafael Devers will skip next week's festivities in Arlington. According to Cora, Devers is dealing with soreness in his left shoulder, and will instead use the All-Star break to rest.

The rest should be worth Devers missing what would be his third All-Star Game appearance (he previously went in 2021 and 2023). He's on pace for a career year through 77 games, slashing .293/.378/.593 with 16 doubles, 21 home runs, and 55 RBIs. His 21 home runs are tied for the eighth most in baseball entering play on Tuesday night, with the fourth-best slugging percentage in MLB.

While the shoulder injury will keep Devers out of the All-Star Game, it doesn't seem to have impacted his play as of late. Over the last 14 days (10 games) he's hitting .368 with six home runs and 14 runs driven in.

Major League Baseball did not immediately announce a replacement for Devers. While that spot will most likely go to a third baseman, the Red Sox did have one other All-Star caliber player who did not get named to the game along with Devers, outfielder Jarren Duran, and pitcher Tanner Houck. Catcher Connor Wong has been one of the best players at his position this year, slashing .310/.365/.441 with 31 runs driven in in 65 games.

The rest of the Red Sox All-Star contingent besides Rafael Devers will head to Texas following the team's six-game homestand this week against the Oakland A's and Kansas City Royals. All-Star festivities kick off Saturday with the Futures Game and Celebrity All-Star Game, with the Home Run Derby on Monday followed by the All-Star Game itself on Tuesday.
