Yesterday on the Toucher & Hardy radio program, Paul Perillo, filling in as co-host with Rob “Hardy” Poole, discussed the NFL Draft with Dane Brugler, known for his comprehensive draft guide “The Beast.” Perillo asked Brugler about the depth of wide receivers in the draft and whether solid contributors could still be found in the third round. Brugler expressed confidence in finding talent even in later rounds and shared his predictions for the New England Patriots’ first three picks in the upcoming draft, including a quarterback at third overall, an offensive tackle at #34, and a wide receiver at #68.

Paul Perillo: We’ve heard a lot about the wide receiver crop and how deep it is. Dane, you know, maybe a third-round kind of guy. Can you still get, you know, maybe, you know, a solid contributor or an immediate contributor in the third round at wide receiver?
Dane Brugler: Yeah, I think so. And this wide receiver position is going to be deep for the rest of our lives. I’m convinced. You know, if you’re not a quarterback and not good enough to be a quarterback growing up, you’re going to be a receiver if you’re one of the best athletes. And those are the guys who score points in today’s modern-day NFL. They are the stars.
So this year, we’re going to see three guys go in the top ten; they look like future star number one type of receivers. And then we’re going to see a couple more go in the first round. And then a lot more going in the second round. We might have 13, 14, maybe 15 receivers off the board in the first two rounds. But even then, I don’t think the cupboard will be bare. There will be other receivers to look at in that third round.
And, you know, my seventh-round mock draft comes out tomorrow on The Athletic. I’m on the same line of thinking with you guys. I’ve got a quarterback going third overall. I’ve got an offensive tackle at #34, and then at #68 in the early third round, I have the Patriots going with a receiver. And I do think there will be some pretty good receiving talent there. If you’re looking at a Malachi Coley from Western Kentucky, maybe a Troy Franklin from Oregon, you know, Jalen Polk from Washington. So I think there will be several worthy candidates there at receiver if they do wait till the third round to address the position.
