Bill O’Brien has another new job
Just over three weeks ago, Bill O’Brien officially parted ways with the Patriots after spending the 2023 season as the team’s offensive coordinator, joining Ohio State in the same role. However, his stay in Columbus was a short one and he’ll now be returning to the Boston area. Just not with the Patriots.
As first reported by New England Football Journal’s Kevin Stone, O’Brien will be leaving his job in Columbus to take the head coaching job at Boston College. A formal announcement is expected either later Friday or on Saturday.

The Boston College job wasn’t open when O’Brien initially left the Patriots. It wasn’t until two weeks later that Jeff Hafley left BC to take the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator job.
By returning to Chestnut Hill O’Brien gets his third chance as a head coach and second chance in the role at the college level. After his first stint as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator he was named head coach at Penn State in 2012, then two seasons later was hired by the Houston Texans.
O’Brien also gets to remain in an area where he has extensive ties, having grown up north of the city in Andover. According to ESPN, O’Brien’s family initially planned to remain in Boston even while he was working in Ohio.
Now, O’Brien will be tasked with turning around a program that has faded from the national spotlight. Last year BC went 7-6, and won its first bowl game since 2016. The Eagles haven’t finished over .500 in ACC play since 2009, and haven’t had a 10-plus win season since 2007.
Meanwhile, the Patriots continue to fill out their coaching staff as the reset on offense, defense, and special teams. Here’s a look at where things stand…
