Red Sox reportedly sign Michael Wacha
The Boston Red Sox have finally advanced out of the ‘interest’ stage, and are set to make their first move of the offseason, with the team reportedly finalizing a one-year deal with starter Michael Wacha, Right-hander Michael Wacha and the Boston Red Sox are finalizing a one-year contract, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN. Wacha, 30, was solid in a starting role for Tampa Bay last season and is expected to bring depth to the Red Sox’s rotation. Deal is pending a physical.
A 30-year-old righty, Wacha spent the 2021 season with the Tampa Bay Rays, and posted a 3-5 record with a 5.05 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 124.2 innings over 29 appearances (23 starts).
The 6-foot-6 Wacha also finished with 121 strikeouts for the Rays, which were his most since 2017, and the third-highest single-season total of his nine-year MLB career.
Prior to joining the Rays, Wacha spent the 2020 season with the Mets and was with the Cardinals from 2013 through 2019, and won a career-high 17 games with the Cards in 2015.
