Red Sox claim SS Jose Iglesias off waivers from Angels
According to multiple reports, the Boston Red Sox are claiming shortstop Jose Iglesias off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reported that Iglesias was present at Fenway Park.
Iglesias, 31, began his major league career with the Red Sox in 2011, playing 98 games in Boston. The team traded him to the Detroit Tigers in 2013 as part of a three-team deal that brought pitchers Jake Peavy and Brayan Villarreal to the Red Sox. Iglesias has also spent time with the Reds, Orioles, and Angels.
The veteran infielder has played 892 career games at shortstop, but also has experience playing second and third base. The Red Sox have needed depth in the infield after shortstop Xander Bogaerts, infielders Yairo Munoz and Christian Arroyo, and utility man Kike Hernandez recently landed on the COVID-19 injured list.
The Red Sox play the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday at Fenway Park, with a 1 p.m. start time. They’ve already announced their starting lineup, which includes infielder Taylor Motter, whom the team recently claimed off waivers from the Rockies. Chris Sale faces Ryan Yarbrough in Monday’s pitching matchup.
