Callahan: Never seen an offensive line commit so many penalties
On Monday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Andrew Callahan reacted to the awful offensive line play from the New England Patriots on Sunday night.
Offensive Line Struggles
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Andrew Callahan: Regarding the offensive line, no, I haven’t seen 8 penalties in the first half of a game. Ten penalties for an entire offensive line in a game, let alone a game against Washington’s backups.
Jon Wallach: Chukwuma Okorafor lined up incorrectly three times in that game, costing them a touchdown. I’ve never seen that from a left tackle.
Fred Toucher: So, we’d been talking about this with Joe Murray before this game. He had been saying like, look, all preseason long the tackles are lining up too deep and incorrectly.
Is this just the case of a lineman losing his mind, or is this the Patriots trying to do something schematically that’s just not working?
Callahan: No, it’s not schematic. This is a real NFL player. And he’s staring down a referee in the way that when your parents said, “I’m going to count to three.” Sometimes you’d call your parents bluff and then get grounded for one week.
You just can’t do this. It’s a real benefit for the offense when the tackles line up like that, especially in pass protection. You can’t line up back there in an illegal way. The tackles would have more time to react and more space to cover.
Okorafor just refused to do it, which is odd because we didn’t see that in the first two games. Right? I didn’t see it in any practices. There were even plenty of refs down in Foxboro for practices.
But last night the referees were calling his bluff.
Wallach: This is not a rookie. This is a guy who’s played in the league for a few years and was a starter at that position in Pittsburgh.
Toucher: So, you think he did this just to make a point to the referees? Like what do you think was going through his mind?
Callahan: So I think this is a less damaging version of like a holding penalty, right? Some people might argue that there’s holding on every single play. Especially, with a lot of offensive linemen even.
Here’s the problem. When we can see it on TV they’re going to call it. Sean Hochuli wants to let us all know he’s been in the gym all summer, he’s ready to go. He’s going to throw the flag and flex on you. Plus, he dropped the “once again” comment in one of the penalties against Okorafor.
