Zolak: Jonathan Kraft is “not heavily involved in the football part of it”
ESPN NFL reporter Dianna Russini caused a stir on Monday by tweeting that Patriots president Jonathan Kraft is “heavily involved in the decision making” when i comes tot he 3rd overall pick in the NFL Draft:
The New England Patriots are listening and taking calls from teams looking to move into 3.

While Eliot Wolf is running point, I’m told Patriots’ President Jonathan Kraft is heavily involved in the decision making.
On the heels of this report, our own Scott Zolak says that he is hearing that Jonathan Kraft is not as involved in football decisions as is being reported:
“I was told Jonathan Kraft is not involved in football. Football decisions are made by the football people. Eliot Wolf, Matt Groh, Jerod Mayo and the football staff. Where I thought they would get involved was that, “hey, this team is calling Mr. Kraft or Jonathan Kraft, and they want our pick at three.” This is where I thought they’re not going to get involved telling you which quarterback to take or who we’re trading back to get. It would make sense to me. If it’s my organization, my team, and there’s this other team offering all this stuff, I would like to be involved in that. And I thought, that’s where this report came from Russini, where Jonathan is involved here. Like, if there’s a big trade in the bag, they’ve got to get it approved. That would be normal operating procedure to me. And I was told that is not the case. This is all Eliot. This is all Jerod. And this is all football people. Jonathan’s not running the football part of it. Business? Yes. Football? No.”
Meanwhile, Marc Bertrand thinks, ownership should in fact be involved to a certain extent, especially this year.
“So Eliot Wolf can trade the number three overall pick and he doesn’t have to run it by anybody? That to me is problematic. I like Eliot Wolf just fine. I think they probably made a decent pick if they’re going to stick with Eliot Wolf going forward, but I’m sorry. Eliot Wolf is, for the first time in his football life, in charge. And this is the best pick the franchise has had in three decades and you don’t have to call upstairs? I want him calling.”
