Marc Bertrand: Patriots aren’t an attractive free agent destination
The NFL announced on Friday that the salary cap for the 2024 season will increase up by $30 million to approximately $255 million. This means that the New England Patriots could have north of $100 million to spend on free agents this offseason. But even with deep pockets, could the Patriots have a tough time enticing the available free agents to come to New England? Beetle explains why the Patriots having all that cap space does not necessarily mean top tier guys will make their way to Foxboro:
‘Why is it that the Patriots are going to win in free agency?’
“The money goes up and I think there’s a an instant reaction that while the Patriots had a lot of money to spend and now they have even more, well, that means everybody else has more money to spend now. So when you have teams across the league that have freed up their precious phony baloney, fake salary cap dollars to spend, when they all have this money now to spend, Why is it that the Patriots will win out over other teams? What is attractive about this place right now for free agents? If everybody has more money and everybody’s got the ability to spend a little bit more. What’s going to make them win out? Is it a quarterback? Because they don’t have one. Is it the head coach? Because right now he’s an unknown. He’s never coached a single game in the NFL. He’s never set up his program. He’s never had players play under him and say it’s good playing for him. It’s bad playing for him. None of it. It doesn’t exist. It’s a brand new head coach and nobody’s played under him. So I don’t know that the head coach is an attraction. There is no quarterback. It’s not a good roster. Why is it that the Patriots are going to win in free agency?”
