The Patriots should “Burn Cash” On Offensive Coordinator
The Patriots have moved on from Bill Belichick and Jerod Mayo is now in charge of putting together a coaching staff. Things seemed to be very positive at the introductory press conference and there has been a lot of support for Mayo in the media and specifically in Foxboro.
There have been plenty of job interviews in the past week for the offensive coordinator role. Remember, Mayo said he was big on people having job titles. So who wants job with a rookie head coach, no direction at quarterback and potential a new General Manager? Again, let’s not forget Mayo said the team was ” Ready to burn some cash.” Shouldn’t they spend some of it on the offensive coordinator?
“According to The Athletic, the Patriots’ offensive coordinator job is “not highly coveted” by the top candidates on the market.”
The list of names that have interviewed include former Sean McVay assistants in Nick Caley and Zac Robinson. They previously interviewed Sean Waldron who took the Bears offensive coordinator job. Dan Pitcher also interviewed but just took the Bengals offensive coordinator job. Half the candidates the Patriots have interviewed have taken other jobs. Based off Howes report, the Patriots are not an attractive job.
“Offensively, while it initially appeared Mayo was coveting coaches with experience in McVay’s system, his current candidate pool paints McDaniels as the odds-on favorite.”
If these are the only candidates, you have to wonder if the team is spending money on the coaching staff. One way to fix the position is to bring back Josh McDaniels. He has the experience, he’s a former head coach and could run a similar offense to McVay’s. The other thing is they won’t have to spend money on the position since McDaniels is getting paid from the Raiders.
Are the Patriots the top choice for Josh McDaniels?
Houston could have an opening if Bobby Slowick leaves for a head coaching job. His brother Ben is the wide receivers coach with the Texans. Let’s not forget the relationship with Nick Caserio and they have a quarterback in CJ Stroud.
If the Patriots miss on Caley, Robinson and McDaniels then what do they do on Offense? Stay tuned!
