Zolak & Bertrand: Montgomery and Sweeney are on thin ice after Bruins big signings
The Bruins made a splash early in free agency by signing center Elias Lindholm and defenseman Nakita Zadorov. Marc Bertrand explains why the big money dished out by the B’s puts both Jim Montgomery and Don Sweeney in the crosshairs this season:
I do think their coach is on thin ice. I do. I thought that before I knew that they were gonna go out and drop $84,000,000 on two free agents on day one. I mean they they expect this team to win a lot of games and if they don’t, I think the first guy who suffers because of. It will be him. Yeah. These are the two defining moves. I think, both for your head coach and your GM moving forward. Say what you will about to collapse from two years ago. I don’t put that on Sweeney. Had the players in place to have a successful playoff run and obviously they choked against Florida two years ago.
So, I don’t throw a ton of the blame in that situation on Sweeney. But you look at these contracts for these two players. If this doesn’t work out, that’s example A and B right there why you now need to move off of that GM.
Don Sweeney is saddling the next GM of this team whenever that is, whoever it is, with bad contracts five years down the road from now. Like ohh, we’ve still got two years to go on the Zadorov deal in five years. Like what? I mean, that’s what you’re talking about four off seasons away.
Can the Bruins now compete with the Florida Panthers? The team that just won the cup. Can they now compete in the East with the Panthers? How different does the series that they played against Florida look with the current roster versus the one they played with? A month and a half ago?
