Scott Zolak: Alex Van Pelt has the hardest job on the Patriots’ staff
On Thursday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Scott Zolak made it clear that Alex Van Pelt has the toughest job on the Patriots coaching staff.
I think the Patriots need 8 starters on offense…
Scott Zolak: So thunder was the magic word of press conference number one. I think the magic word of press conference number two was pieces, because that’s all Alex Van Pelt kept talking about is pieces. I think he’s got the most difficult job on anybody in that staff. Now Jerod’s got his hands full.
Michael Holley: Why?
Scott Zolak: I think he needs at least 8 or 9 players to even know what kind of offense he’s going to run. I look at Rhamondre Stevenson, Pop Douglas, and David Andrews. Like we know Sidy Sow is going to be there. I don’t know what condition the left guard is going to be in. We don’t know who the tackles are, who the tight ends are, who the number one or the number two wide receivers are.
Michael Holley: You’re talking about 8 starters?
Scott Zolak: I think you could potentially need eight.
Michael Holley: Woah. You could want that, I can understand that they want that. But there’s no way you’re going to get eight starters for the 2024 season for the Patriots. I mean, you could bring in 8 people. But you know eight quality starters. I don’t think it’s that bad because you’ve got first of all, you talked about the guards, you didn’t mention the name Cole Strange.
Scott Zolak: Well, I’m not sure if he’s going to be ready to go to start of the season. You know what I mean. Well, ACL for a big guy like most quick twitch guys are back in about eight months, you know, because they rehab the hell out of it. They don’t have the weight. You know, he’s got to get power. His whole game is predicated on power and leverage. You know all the receivers do and running backs do is run. So you just work on working on your mechanics that way. I guess it’s difficult for an offensive linemen, even though they are tough to come back and be 100% ready to go. He may be one of those guys that’s on that, you know, sort of pup list to begin the season.
Michael Holley: All right. He may be on the PUP list. We’ve talked about wide receivers and offensive linemen. But the thing that Alex Van Pelt said yesterday that stood out to me. He said all options are on the table when he was asked about Mac Jones. Is that real or is Alex Van Pelt playing the organizational game, the game you got to play because you can’t come out and say Mac Jones is not going to be here iff you want to get a draft pick for him.
Scott Zolak: I’m going to go with B.. That’s the stuff he has to say. It’s exactly what I expected him to say.
