Bruins need to stop trading away 1st-round draft picks – Felger & Mazz
On Thursday’s Felger & Mazz radio program, the guys discuss potential moves for the Boston Bruins to make at the upcoming trade deadline.
Sick of Bruins Trading 1st-Round Picks?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Felger: It’s time to start talking about the NHL trade deadline. The Bruins are decimated on defense. They’ve been linked to, or people have been writing about Noah Hanifin, Jakob Chychrun, or one of these guys going to Boston. I’m out on that idea. I’m done trading away first-round picks.
The Bruins have traded away five of their last seven first-round picks. I think it’s something like that. I’ve given the stat to you before, but they’ve just traded away so many of their picks. You can’t keep doing it. And they’ve done it the last several trade deadlines. It hasn’t amounted to anything.
I’m a little bit more in that camp of—things will sink or swim with the team you built originally. Let’s just try that. And if I’m trading anything, it will be a hockey trade. I’m not trading draft picks.
I’ll trade a goalie. Do they want to give me Hanifin or Chychrun? Do they have something that you like on defense for a goalie? No problem with that. Do it all day long. I’m fine with packaging up DeBrusk, Carlo, Grzelcyk, or Heinen. You name it. But I’m not trading Matthew Poitras and Mason Lohrei. You must stop trading away draft picks. I’m holding my water a little bit on those younger players.
If the Bruins deal something more towards the top of the roster, certainly one of those guys in the net, I’m fine with that all day long. But I’m done with the first-round pick for a rental guy sort of thing.
Jim Murray: The rental part is what bugs me. I go back to the Tyler Bertuzzi thing, and I’ve gotten my arguments with my friends about this. I get he’s having a terrible season for the Maple Leafs, but he’s a better fit here. I just hate it.
If you’re going to trade away a first-round pick, you’ve got to tell me that you’ll extend a guy like that. But, now I’m now more on your side in the sense that I’m done with all this rental crap. You’re probably better off riding with what you’ve got.
Felger: I’m holding my water on draft picks and young players this year. I’m just going to try that for a year. I’ll trade a goalie, though. I’ll do that all day long.
