Felger & Mazz: Linus Ullmark trade thoughts
The Boston Bruins traded goaltender Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators on Monday night. On Tuesday’s Felger and Mazz, the guys gave their thoughts on the trade.
Felger: Then they Bruins trade Linus Ullmark last night, your thoughts on that?
Mazz: So I don’t like the trade. To me the whole purpose of moving Ullmark is to free up the money and then be able to do other things. And it’s not the only reason, but it’s one of the primary things. You’re putting too much money into goaltending. You’ve got other holes on the roster. You need to be able to fill. And the draft pick, let me just get this part out, I like. Of course. The Bruins have completely stripped their chest bare of all the draft picks so they got a first rounder out of it. I like that. But to take a goalie back who is still going to go for $3 million on your books? Like to me, no. Now if they flip him, I’ll make that judgment later. But here today, right now, I don’t like it. I didn’t want another goalie back making $3 million bucks to put behind Jeremy Swayman.
Jim Murray: Yeah, I don’t like the Korpisalo end of it, but with no extension in place Ottawa was not going to give up the farm. So that you got a first rounder back, even if isn’t a high first rounder, I’m good with it. I feel like this thing is universally hated, I swear this thing’s universally hated because the hockey people are saying “Well, we’re losing a good guy, and we’re going to miss the hugs at the end of the game”. I swear to God.
Felger: Really. Is that what you think?
Jim Murray: Yeah. At least I feel like, “well, we’re losinga great guy. He’s such a great guy”, I’m sure he is great, and he was good here. You can’t have the two goalie thing. It’s not going to work. And I’m sorry you’re going to miss the hugs at the end, and you’re not gonna be able to hug Swayman anymore? “Yay, we won hugs”, I think it’s a sentimental thing more than anything else.
Felger: Oh, well, if that’s what people are hanging on to then F off.
Jim Murray: So again, I don’t love the Korpisalo end of it. Like that blows. Like I didn’t want another goalie back, especially maybe the guy that’s the worst in the league. And if they are going keep him, Good luck Bob Essensa! Goalie Bob!
Felger: Well the legit second guess is that Sweeney got pushed around or gave in or didn’t stick to his guns and hold out for a more appropriate return. Which a lot of people think he could have and should have.
