Zolak & Bertrand: Is ‘The Dynasty’ a cautionary tale for the Chiefs?
Zolak and Bertrand react to the first two episodes of The Dynasty on Apple TV chronicling the championship run of the New England Patriots. This led to a discussion about whether or not the Kansas City Chiefs should learn from the revelations of how the Patriots operated for 20+ years:
Cautionary tale for the Kansas City Chiefs?
Bertrand: Was [Bill Belichick] emboldened by the success? Reading his own press clippings.
Zolak: Your chest sort of pumps up more when you get six rings as opposed to none at that time. The brand stamped itself. People would come here, take less to play here to win a championship. Those days are gone. It’s the way it felt. And Brady led that charge even though he figured out how to get his money at some point. But you know, for the most part he was taking less. Bruschi taking less, guys sticking around. Rodney [Harrison] wanted to come here. Rodney was a big get for them because he was coming here. Replaced Lawyer Milloy and Bill knew it because Lawyer’s contract got too high.
Bertrand: Do you think that’ll happen for the Chiefs?
Zolak: I wonder. That’s why I said that’s the first thing I said when this thing was going to hit. Will Clark Hunt, Andy Reid and their GM and Patrick Mahomes and [Travis] Kelce and Chris Jones and all those guys that are up there. Watch this and watch out. End it and watch how how it came apart. There more many stories like the Dallas documentaries to where we could look back and say, ‘well, we don’t want to be like Dallas at the end.’ Changed coaches Jimmy and Jerry couldn’t get along. We kind of knew the story, but you didn’t know full detail. This is pretty detailed. This really hammers home the reporting that’s been done on it because there’s a lot of people say, well, I don’t really believe Wickersham or I don’t believe this, and there’s some middle of it kind of hits true on everything.
