Perry: Jerod Mayo will bring ‘much different perspective’ than Belichick
Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston joined Zolak & Bertrand following the announcement that the Patriots will hire Jerod Mayo as the 15th head coach in franchise history. Perry explains why Mayo could bring a new look to the Patriots despite having worked under Bill Belichick in New England”
“That stuff is going to change drastically here in New England”
“Are you bothered by the fact that they aren’t bringing in new ideas in the form of different head coaching candidates? And get to know other coaches, and maybe there are opportunities down the line where, ‘hey, remember that guy we talked to him for multiple occasions over the course of a week and a half. And we really liked what he had to say. And now, you know, we need a defensive coordinator or we need an offensive coordinator. Let’s go see if that guy’s interested.’
“If you know you’re hiring Mayo no matter what. And yeah, it’d be nice to maybe glean some different ideas from some new people that we bring in. But if those interviews are essentially “sham interviews” because you know who you’re hiring all along, is that what you want to do? Because now the league is caught a lot of heat over the course of the last few years, because in complying with the Rooney Rule, there are teams that conduct “sham interviews”. They know they’re not hiring these guys. And I know Mayo has been lumped in that group, he’s been worried about ‘is this team really interested in me.’
“I think what’s nice for the Krafts is that Mayo represents an opportunity to bring some of that which he’s acquired over many, many years now working under Bill Belichick. So you can maintain some of the things that you want to maintain as a franchise, as a culture. But he’s also going to bring a much different perspective. I mean, they are very different people. As much time as they spent together. I think it would be a mistake to assume that they share all the same football philosophies, and there is no question that they’re going to handle things like relationships in the building, relationships with those in the front office, how to handle players. That stuff is going to change drastically here in New England.”
