Kiké Hernández continues defensive hot streak with robbed home run (Video)
Kiké Hernández continued his hot streak in center field for the Red Sox on Monday night, robbing the Angels’ Luis Rengifo of a potential home run to preserve what was a one-run lead at the time. You can watch Hernández track the ball and time his leap to snag it in the video above.
Hernández has played center field in five of his last six games, and notched two outfield assists to go with his five total putouts at the position. He last committed an error in the outfield on June 10. One of the assists came in Monday’s win over the Angels, in which Hernández threw out Max Stassi at second base.
The other assist was a clutch double play on Friday night in Oakland, when Hernández made a catch then threw out the Athletics’ Seth Brown at home plate to prevent the potential tying run and preserve a 3-2 win in the 10th inning. Hernández is now up to five assists as a center fielder, tied for the most in baseball at the position.
And Hernández’s weekend followed up a spectacular diving catch at Fenway Park on June 30.
At the plate, Hernández has just a .743 OPS on the season. But for a Red Sox defense that’s committed the most errors in baseball with 60, he’s been a relative bright spot.
