Belichick: Cam Newton brings the energy from the field to the dining room

To the outside observer, Bill Belichick hates fun and personalities. But to anyone who follows the Patriots closely, it’s clear that internally, he doesn’t stop players from being unapologetically themselves.
Cam Newton is distinctly charismatic. His on-field energy is palpable to reporters in attendance at Patriots training camp. And Belichick confirmed during his video conference on Wednesday that not only is he perfectly OK with Newton being himself, but that he’s bringing that same energy everywhere.
“I think that’s Cam’s personality,” Belichick said. “I think you see that in the morning going into the squad meeting, or seeing it on the practice field, or in the dining room, whatever it happens to be. That’s kind of the way he is. All the players on the team – we’re all different, we have different personalities, and that’s what makes up a team, that diversity of people and some guys with a lot of experience, some guys with no experience, and plenty in between.

“It’ll be interesting to see how it comes together. Each team forms its own chemistry. Certainly Cam is an important part of that, but so are all the other guys, the other 79 players on the team, and the coaches as well.”

If he’s bringing that same personality to the dining room, one might picture the scene in Animal House where John Belushi dances his way down the food line. Just with a real specimen of a man instead of a boorish potato like Belushi.
It’s certainly a different type of energy that Tom Brady brought to the Patriots. Brady brought the energy in terms of his focus and intensity. Newton seems to bring it more in the form of loose excitement and enthusiasm for perfectly executed practice reps.

We’ll see if Newton’s form of energy translates to winning like it has for the past 20 years in New England. But Belichick seems happy with what he’s seen so far from both his personality and performance.
