Kristaps Porzingis isn’t the only member of the Celtics who will need offseason surgery
Kristaps Porzingis wasn’t the only member of the Celtics working through a leg injury during the team’s championship run. Head coach Joe Mazzulla was as well.
It’s not uncommon that after a team completes a championship run, reports start coming out about the injuries players were dealing with and surgeries some may have been putting off. The 2024 Boston Celtics are no exception.
The biggest injury the Celtics were dealing with in the NBA Finals this year was Kristaps Porzingis suffering what was described as a ‘rare‘ tear and dislocation in his ankle. Porzingis suffered in the injury in Game 2 of the series, leading to him missing Games 3 and 4. He played a limited role in Game 5, scoring five points in 16 minutes off the bench.
“A lot of effort went into all of this and also for myself, just being hurt and trying to push through it,” Porzingis said after the game in the locker room. “I think today was the pinnacle of that. My leg is not great, but I gave everything I could to the team, and we are the world champs.”
“Obviously what was put out, it was the truth. It was, like, something torn. And then my tendon is just out of place,” he later added in his postgame press conference when asked about playing through the injury. “Pretty much hurts on every step. Like, I would take a walk in Dallas, and my leg would swell up.”
Now that there are no more games to play for a while, Porzingis can get the issue addressed fully. According to Tim Bontemps of ESPN, Porzingis will have surgery on that ankle that will hold him out for “a few months.” Of course, at least a few of those months will come during the offseason.
However, Porzingis isn’t the only member of the Celtics who will be undergoing surgery after the title. Following Monday night’s win, head coach Joe Mazzulla shared he too will be heading under the knife.
“Hey, guess what? I’ve got to have knee surgery. I tore my meniscus in March after we lost to Atlanta,” Mazzulla said in an ESPN interview. “I’m going to be out a little while. I’ve been working through it since March.”
The Celtics lost a pair of games to the Hawks in Atlanta in March, 120-118 on the 25th and then 123-122 in overtime on the 28th. It was one of only four times they lost consecutive games this season.
Mazzulla, 35, keeps himself active while coaching the Celtics. He and the other assistants will play against each other on the court before practices and games, and we also found out this year he practices jiu-jitsu.
That will likely have to all go on hold as Mazzulla rehabs from his knee injury, but he didn’t say anything about whether it would impact his role to start next season. NBA coaches have done the job injured before – just this year Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch had to undergo knee surgery during the playoffs and coached the remainder of his team’s run fully seated on the bench (rather than standing and walking the sideline).
For now, that seems to be it for Celtics injuries from the 2023-2024 season. They were one of the few teams in the NBA that stayed mostly healthy throughout the season, something that stayed true almost to the end. Meanwhile, Porzingis and Mazzulla enter their rehab process knowing the team was still able to get the job done and win Banner 18.
