Report: Jaylen Brown could ‘seek a move’ this offseason
The Celtics have played their best basketball of the year over the last two weeks with wins in four of their last five games. Jaylen Brown has been a big part of that success, averaging 26.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game during that stretch. “The energy is about to shift” Brown tweeted on Tuesday.
While the energy around the Celtics is positive for now, there are high stakes for it to stay that way. According to Steve Bulpett of Heavy.com, Brown, who turned 25 in October, could look to request a trade in the offseason if the Celtics go back to their inconsistent ways.
“Absent the team getting its act together and playing more to its potential, Brown could be the one to acknowledge that the mix isn’t right and seek a move,” Bulpett writes. He added that the Celtics have no plans to move Brown at the deadline, and such a move – if it happens at all – would occur over the summer.
Still, it seems as though Brown doesn’t want to leave, and would prefer to try to fix things in Boston. “Players are saying Brown has taken a more vocal role, indicating that he obviously wants to avoid major changes and make things work with the current core,” Bulpett reports.
Bulpett then added in a follow-up tweet that Brown “has not requested a trade” at this time, and that a Celtics course told him “I think every one of the players has expressed frustration at some point this season.”
Amid the Celtics’ struggled the past few seasons, trading young stars Brown and/or Jayson Tatum has been floated as an idea to jumpstart the team. While that concept has been pushed back on for the most part, this is the first indication the team or the players involved may actually explore that path.
The Celtics drafted Brown 3rd overall in the 2016 NBA Draft. He’s been a cornerstone member of the organization since, an last season averaged a career-high 24.7 points per game and was named to his first All-Star Game. So far this season he’s averaging 24.4 points per game, second on the team behind Tatum.
