Brad Stevens on Toucher and Rich: Addressing Danny Ainge’s departure
Danny Ainge is back in the news. He’s not staying retired. Instead, the former Celtics President of Basketball Ops is now the alternate governor and CEO of the Utah Jazz.
The Celtics’ current President of Basketball Ops, Brad Stevens, took over for Ainge in the offseason while Ime Udoka took over for him as head coach. So, in light of Ainge’s return to NBA front office work, Stevens was asked about it in a new interview with 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher and Rich.
Rich did a quick Google search and found something of an emerging narrative that Ainge was forced out of his post with the Celtics, rather than he made the decision himself to step down. Stevens dismissed that narrative as almost comically false, and said he knew over a month in advance that Ainge was leaving the Celtics to take a break from it all before deciding on his future.
“If that’s at the top of Google, it must be true,” Stevens deadpanned. “No, I would say that I was here for that entire sequence of events, and he let everybody know that he was stepping away and wanted to step away to have a chance to spend more time with his family, to rejuvenate and then figure out what’s next in life – two months before it was announced, a month and a half before it was announced.
“People can write what they want, but it’s not true.”
People may or may not believe Stevens here, but it’s clear that he has his own viewpoint on what happened with Ainge and doesn’t bother with what people on the internet are saying about it. Listen above for the full interview.
