Marc Bertrand: Is Alex Van Pelt falling in love with Drake Maye?
On Friday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Marc “Beetle” Bertrand explained why he thinks Alex Van Pelt is falling in love with his rookie quarterback.
Van Pelt seems like a genuine guy…
Marc Bertrand:
I was just about to compliment Alex Van Pelt for all the things he said this week about Drake Maye because it sounds, appropriately so, like there has been a change in the tone of the offensive coordinator of this team a little bit. I think Alex Van Pelt over these last two weeks has started to fall in love with his rookie quarterback. That is what I think is happening. You had some great quotes that you printed. I’ve heard them as well from his press conference this week. When he said Drake Maye, very natural leader, great studier, very intelligent guy, he’s asking the right questions in the meeting room. He talked about the text messages that are rolling in at night from Drake Maye about what he’s looking at. And he said that was a great sign that he knows Drake Maye is going home at night and studying hard, working hard, putting in a lot of hours. Van Pelt said you put in a new play, you come in on Wednesday and this guy’s ready to rock’n’roll and already up to speed. I think he’s starting to see what he has in his young quarterback. I think he’s starting to see the potential there. Van Pelt also said he’s impressed with his approach. He said that he’s a great leader. I mean, he just said so many nice things about the kid. I don’t know if it’s by default. He’s now the starting quarterback, you want to pump him up. You want to prop him up or it’s genuine, which I feel like with Alex Van Pelt, he’s a decently genuine guy. When he talks, I think he kind of just tells you what he’s thinking. I don’t think there’s a lot of bullcrap there. It feels like he’s starting to realize that he’s got some real potential in this kid and that’s the way he should feel.
