Zolak & Bertrand: Stop tricking yourself into thinking Drake Maye will start Week 1
The commentary continues when it comes to Drake Maye possibly leapfrogging Jacoby Brissett on the depth chart in time to be named starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Zolak and Bertrand discuss why the talk about Drake Maye as Week 1 starter needs to stop:
Beetle: How bad would Jacoby Brissett need to be for Drake Maye to ascend into that role in the final week of the preseason? How bad would he have to be? He’d have to be incapable of going out and taking a snap.
Zolak: It’s not only that, it’s the blown opportunity of game one {of the preseason} not playing Maye long enough. That sort of set the table for everything, because that basically entrenched Jacoby as the starter. You get your second guy to go in there and take seven snaps and really not throw it much. You’re not taking a peek at him. You’re not trying to get stuff on film. You’re not trying to coach him up there. That’s just trying to get his feet wet in the game. Because he’s so raw, he’s so nervous. He’s so young. That’s what’s in their head right now. And just because you go out there and run stuff off magic cards and it looks great, that doesn’t mean you’re going to run your stuff. That doesn’t mean you can run your offense the right way. You can go out there and envision something. I don’t care how good he makes the Washington offense look in practice. That’s not going to make them take the jump over Jacoby to put him in Week 1.
Beetle: Yeah, and Jerrod Mayo said they were going to give Drake Mayer an opportunity here to win this job. They’re not doing it. They haven’t given him first team reps in practice. It hasn’t happened. He didn’t tell the truth. You knew that was going to be the case. They don’t want the kid to start. They want Jacoby Brissett to start. They are lining it up for Jacoby Brissett to start. I think that this conversation going into Sunday night is kind of pointless. I don’t think Drake Maye can go out and win the job on Sunday night. I hope he plays well. That would be fun. We need that. You need something good.
Zolak: If Jacoby goes out, goes 1-for-6 and a pick, and Drake goes in, he’s 10-for-12 in two drives for touchdowns, you have problem next week. I’m talking external noise problem, right? We’ve got we’ve got to shut it down. Ignore all the noise outside these walls. And that’s a tough thing for them to do with the new staff.
