Would Paying Matthew Judon Set a Bad Precedent For Eliot Wolf?
On Monday’s edition of Zolak and Bertrand, the show discussed the impending start of Patriots training camp, and how Matthew Judon’s contract situation still remains unresolved. This led to a big question being debated, if Eliot Wolf decides to reward Matthew Judon with a raise, would that set a bad precedent for the general manager going forward?
Don’t You Draw a Line In The Sand?…
Zolak: You need to get off to a good start with him. Make him happy. Give him a bump this year. That’s it. Then move on that’s what I’d do. You got the money to do it, you know what I mean? Does this hurt your team? Like, would this hurt your ability to bargain moving forward? I don’t think so, because I think the team and other players view him as one of their best players on defense. So that’s the guy you should take care of. I’m not saying break the bank for the guy.
Bertrand: They only have nine days to do it though.
Zolak: Yeah, you can do it.
Bertrand: Better get talking. Clock is ticking, guys.
McKone: At a certain point though, don’t you draw a line in the sand? Like if you have Josh Uche who wants another deal.
Zolak: Well that’s different.
McKone: Are we just going to pay everybody now?
Bertrand: I mean, if you’re paying him then why are you paying him? You could get away with it with him. I think because he’s got such a good track record and the way he’s viewed. But, you’d be setting a precedent that I don’t think a new GM wants to set, which is – veteran player doesn’t like his deal and demands more money, and we just give it to him. Especially coming off a year that he played four games. That’s not a great precedent to set. To me, if I’m Eliott Wolf, I’m coming down with the hammer just to prove a point. It’s going to make the team worse. There’s no doubt about that.
