Kristaps Porzingis gives encouraging update on his condition after Game 2
Boston Celtics forward Kristaps Porzingis looked limited at times in Game 2, he isn’t worried.
After his starring role in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, Boston Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis showed more wear and tear in Game 2. Part of what made Porzingis’ Game 1 performance so impressive was the fact that he was returning after missing over a month due to a calf injury. That absence led to questions about conditioning and rust, which didn’t seem to be an issue in that game.
While Porzingis found some success in Game 2 – He scored 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting with four rebounds and two blocks, while recording a team-high plus-12 while on the floor- he looked much more labored than he did in the series opener.
The difference was notable and had some wondering if the injury was going to continue to be an issue (although its worth noting Porzingis’ role increased in Game 2 when he played 23 minutes, up from 20 in Game 1). However, both Porzingis and head coach Joe Mazzulla downplayed that idea after the game.
“I feel good. Feeling good. I don’t think it’s anything serious,” Porzingis told reporters after the game. “But we’ll look at it tomorrow and go from there. But all good. I’ll be good.”
While Porzingis couldn’t/wouldn’t narrow down exactly what was bothering him on Sunday (“I don’t even know what it is, to be honest. But I’ll be good.”), he doesn’t plan on missing any time. Asked if his status is in doubt for Game 3, Porzingis told reporters “I will die out there.”
Mazzulla wasn’t quite as direct, but downplayed any major issue. When asked if he was worried about Kristaps Porzingis’ status forward, he replied “no, he’s good.”
Porzingis will have some extra time to rest up before he needs to take the floor again. There are two off days (including a travel day) before the series shifts to Dallas for Game 3.
