Celtics assistant lands head NBA coaching job
Charles Lee, one of the Boston Celtics’ top assistant coaches, is being hired by the Charlotte Hornets as their next head coach.
As the Boston Celtics prepare for Game 2 of their Eastern Conference Semifinals series against the Cleveland Cavaliers, one of their assistant coaches is taking a big step of his own. On Thursday afternoon ahead of Game 2, the Charlotte Hornets announced they’re hiring Charles Lee as their next head coach.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Lee will finish up this year’s playoff run with the Celtics before focusing on the Hornets’ job full-time. As Joe Mazzulla’s lead assistant, that could be an important development for the Celtics.
Lee, 39, has been with the Celtics for less than a year. He joined the team last June, after spending five years as an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks working under Mike Budenholzer.
Even when he joined the Celtics last year, Lee was viewed as one of the top league’s top assistant coaches and a potential head coaching candidate. Lee was also viewed as a candidate for the Lakers’ job this year.
Lee was one of six assistants on the Celtics staff this year. The rest of the group working under Joe Mazzulla includes Sam Cassell, Anthony Dobbins, Amile Jefferson, DJ MacLeay, and Matt Reynolds.
The Celtics – with Lee – will be back on the floor at TD Garden Thursday night to face the Cavaliers for Game 2. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. ET, with pregame coverage beginning at 6:30 on the BetMGM 98.5 The Sports Hub Celtics Radio Network.
