The Boston Celtics are just over a week out from starting their 2024 playoff run. Before their latest chase of Banner 18 gets underway though, the C’s took care of some business looking well beyond this May and June.
On Wednesday night, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Celtics have agreed to a contract extension with guard Jrue Holiday. The new contract is worth $135 million over four years, which has Holiday scheduled to be the third-highest-paid Celtic next year, behind Jaylen Brown recently got a supermax extension(who ) and Jayson Tatum.

Prior to signing this extension, Holiday had a $37.3 million player option on the books for the 2024-2025 season. He’ll now decline that option, which according to Wojnarowski “saves the Celtics several million on the cap next year and aids in keeping together a talented and expensive core.” According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the deal saves the Celtics $35 million in luxury tax penalties next year.
Woj also added that Holiday is the fourth player in NBA history age 33 or older to sign a deal with more than $100 guaranteed. He joins Steph Curry, LeBron James, and current Celtic Al Horford.
Holiday, who will turn 34 in June, was acquired by the Celtics via trade this offseason. After being dealt from the Milwaukee Bucks – where he’d spent the previous three seasons – to the Portland Trail Blazers, the Blazers a few days later flipped him to Boston in exchange for guard Malcolm Brogdon, center Robert Williams, and two future first-round picks.
So far, Holiday’s initial season in Boston has been a successful one. In 68 games, all starts, he’s averaging 12.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists in 32.9 minutes per game while shooting 48.1 percent from the floor and a career-high 43.1 percent from deep.
With Holiday extended, the Celtics have almost all of their key rotational players under contract for the next two seasons, through the 2025-2026 campaign. The only pending unrestricted free agent for this offseason who has played regular minutes for the Celtics this year is Luke Kornet, while Derrick White, Al Horford, and Sam Hauser are the only such players for next year.

Boston Celtics potential first-round playoff matchups
The NBA season is winding down and with that the first round of the playoffs are on the horizon for the Boston Celtics. Who that first round opponent will be is still to be determined but the picture is becoming clearer. So let’s take a look at who some of those potential matchups could be.
Boston has been coasting this season dominating in the regular season with a league best 60-16 record. The Celtics have already locked up the #1 seed in the entire NBA with their win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night at the Garden.

Most Likely: Philadelphia 76ers
Right now for the Boston Celtics the Philadelphia 76ers are mathematically their most likely first round opponent. Celtics fans may see this matchup and see it as a good thing as they have dominated the 76ers in the playoffs in recent years. However with last seasons MVP Joel Embiid returning from injury and new 76ers head coach Nick Nurse at the helm this 76ers team may be a tougher out than in years past.
Embiid hasn’t played in a long time and will have limited minutes of regular season basketball under his belt heading into the playoffs but could this actually be a benefit to the 76ers. Getting a rested Joel Embiid could be a massive difference maker for a team that’s desperate to get a playoff series win against the Celtics. Nick Nurse is another key piece of why I wouldn’t be thrilled if the Celtics draw the 76ers in the first round.
Nurse is one of the better coaches in the league and being able to strategize for a Celtics team over a potential 7 game series should give any fan some slight pause. No matter who the Celtics first round opponent is they have no excuses to not make it out of the first round but Philadelphia poses a much tougher test than your normal 8 seed matchup.
