Scott Zolak: Patriots are “vastly incomplete” right now
On Tuesday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Scott Zolak made it clear that the Patriots are vastly incomplete right now.
Can you follow the 49ers plan?
Marc Bertrand: This is something I want to ask to the people who want to trade out. Where is the quarterback coming from when you do this? Is it your second round plan where you draft a guy in the second round? Is it a plan where you just wait for another day because you can’t tell me they’re not ready for a quarterback, so you can’t draft one in this draft at the top of the draft because they don’t have the pieces. They don’t have the receivers, they don’t have the tackles. They don’t have the protection. Well, then you can’t draft anybody else in this draft. So where is that guy coming from? When are you getting the quarterback? Just curious.
Phil Perry: You could get lucky. You could fall into a Dak Prescott. You could fall into a Kirk Cousins. You could fall into a Jalen Hurts or a Brock Purdy, right?
Marc Bertrand: That’s a good plan.
Phil Perry: That’s what these teams did and to the caller’s point. What he’s describing is sort of what the Niners did. They built a great roster. Then they traded away a ton of draft capital to move up for the guy that they thought was the guy and he failed and look at him now. Now they just made the Super Bowl. They got lucky with the seventh round pick at quarterback. Is that a plan that you want to try to follow? Is that a replicable plan?
Marc Bertrand: No, they don’t have the guys to do that. I’m sorry. Alex Van Pelt is not going to be the guy to do that. He’s not exactly cutting edge. Kyle Shanahan is a great offensive mind. He got lucky with Brock Purdy in the seventh round.
Scott Zolak: He was forced to do that because they paid for Garoppolo. You can even say they overpaid. They made a massive, massive trade to try to get up get Trey Lance. They couldn’t draft another guy high after that, even though everybody says take a shot at the quarterback. At that point, we’re paying for Jimmy and we don’t like him. Our trade blew up in our face. This kid’s a bust. We could only select a kid lower now and it worked out for them. Hurts was a second rounder, so I mean like that would be more of a plan for for me. Like to get the tackle or get the receiver. Get a guy in a second round or trade up high second round, late first. Get a guy.
Phil Perry: Generally speaking, though, that’s not where the starting quarterbacks come from. They come from the first round. So, you’re hoping to get lucky again.
Scott Zolak: You get drafted and play him.
Phil Perry: And that Eagles build took about ten years. You know Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson were drafted when Jalen Hurts was still in high school.
Scott Zolak: I can’t tell you how many people around here that I talked to outside this building. I’m not talking to the Patriots. Just like random people and friends. If they take a guy at 3, they better play him or we’re pissed. Like we’re not going to games. You know how much this team needs? Like you talk about grades, it’s hard to give them a grade because I think they’re vastly incomplete.
