Dan Roche on current state of Boston Red Sox: “It’s embarrassing”
Boston Red Sox fans entered the offseason with high hopes, expecting the team to prioritize significant moves. They stressed the need to bolster the starting pitching and voiced a strong desire for competitive performance, aiming to climb from the bottom of the American League East. The organization assured fans of fewer financial restrictions, pledging to go “full throttle.” However, as the season draws near, little has changed, and the team’s prospects appear dim. Even players like Rafael Devers, dubbed the “Carita” of the franchise by Cora, openly discuss the team’s shortcomings. During a media session on February 20th, Devers pointed out the team’s clear needs that remain unaddressed despite promises.
During this morning’s “Toucher & Hardy” radio program, Dan Roche, filling in for Rob “Hardy” Poole, expresses dismay over the current state of the Boston Red Sox. Fred Toucher notes the team’s public negativity even before the season begins, prompting Roche to voice his disappointment, describing it as embarrassing and leaving him shaking his head. He highlights the team’s strong ownership history and spending power but criticizes their recent inaction. Toucher emphasizes the significant room under the luxury tax threshold, suggesting the team could still make impactful signings. Roche agrees, mentioning potential acquisitions like Jordan Montgomery or Adam Duvall that could change perceptions of the team’s offseason.

TRANSCRIPT:
Fred Toucher: Red Sox spring training is going on. I don’t recall, and I haven’t heard anyone recall a team being this down on itself before a season even started publicly. I mean, they haven’t even played an exhibition game yet and they’re already kind of conceding this season. Dan, you are very close to this team. What are your thoughts on what’s going on?
Dan Roche: I think it’s embarrassing Fred, to be honest with you. I think it’s, I don’t know, I just keep shaking my head. I think, like everybody else and anybody around the team. That’s been around the team for a long time. Former players of what have you was, you know, from even Raffy Devers. And everyone else is just like, I don’t know, it’s just very disappointing to see this from what I think has been, a great ownership from day one here when they got here with John Henry and Tom Warner, Larry Lucchino, just suddenly stopped in a lot of ways. And that, yes, they spend money, there’s a payroll, but they’re going to be what. But midway this year is the 15th.
Fred Toucher: And and they’re quite they have a if their argument this was they they want to hit the luxury tag. They’re tens of millions of dollars below it.
Dan Roche: So I mean yeah they had room. They still have room to go out and sign. And I know Boris is a hold up or what have you, but I think if you signed Jordan Montgomery and if he wanted to sign, you know, even Adam Duvall, bring him back here. I think everybody looks at it differently.
