FRED TOUCHER: What’s the latest on the Patriots’ draft? Now that you’ve had a week to sit down and talk to people, what are they saying?
ALBERT BREER: I believe there’s no question that this will be judged based on what happens with Drake Maye, one way or the other. And that applies to all the teams, including the two quarterbacks and the six of them in the top 12. The biggest question for me now that the draft is over: have they done enough to support their young quarterback? I’ve been asked what would constitute a successful season for Drake Maye as a rookie. I actually think it’s going to be things you probably won’t see directly—it’s about what’s happening in practice. A crucial aspect of effecting sustainable change in a quarterback’s fundamentals is keeping them out of third-and-long situations, emphasizing discipline. For example, sometimes when facing third and 17, it’s better to run a draw play than to expose them to high-pressure situations. Take the Zach Wilson example—he was thrown out there and looked lost because the team wasn’t performing well. You have to protect him from those scenarios. Now, more pointedly, do they have the team to do that? And if they don’t, they can’t afford to put him in those situations.
