Beetle: It feels worse knowing the Patriots wanted Jakobi Meyers
On Tuesday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Marc “Beetle” Bertrand explained why it feels worse knowing the Patriots wanted Jakobi Meyers back.
They were in the ballpark of what he got from the Raiders…
Marc Bertrand: So they did make an offer. Considerable offer, but they were only $1 million off. Which I think the bigger news is, I know the headline is the Patriots couldn’t come up with another million dollars. I think the bigger story is they made a real offer to him. They were in the ballpark of what he got from the Raiders. So they did want him because I thought they were done with this guy and they were just going for a different player. Turns out they weren’t done and they lost him for a million bucks. That feels worse. That they did want him. I just thought they didn’t want him.
Scott Zolak: So it’s mismanaging or underestimating what the market would be at that position. If you were up to 32 and said oh crap, we lost out on the player. We need to get back into the market, get up the 33 and go get the next best available. It was JuJu. It wasn’t like they fell in love with JuJu and said we’re making a switch. I got fooled by the whole thing and I thought they were trying to upgrade the position and get a more dynamic player and I was wrong. I went over and talked to Meyers yesterday. Said hi, we miss you and boy did we get it wrong with JuJu.
Michael Holley: And you really believed at the time that JuJu was a more dynamic player?
Scott Zolak: I did because you watch the catch. Everything you watch with him, it’s catch. At least there was some run. There would be a 19-yard run. Meyers was always catch and down.
Marc Bertrand: Here’s how they look better. Here’s how the Pats look better. They don’t look like they got duped on the knee because I thought, you guys thought he was okay and you didn’t know he had the knee issue. No. They knew when they had to sign him anyway because they had lost out on Jakobi Myers. That’s how it actually went down. That’s what that answer tells me. They really offered him a real deal, $1 million short of what he got in Vegas. And then what did they have to do? They had to get JuJu Smith-Schuster signed, and they may have done it knowing that this guy might have a bad knee but we need a receiver. That’s the worst kind of signing.
