Marc Bertrand: The beauty of the 3rd overall pick
yOn Tuesday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Marc Bertrand breaks down the beauty of the Patriots having the 3rd overall pick.
I would take a quarterback…
Marc Bertrand: I don’t think May’s going to be there. I think he’s going to be gone. But if he isn’t, they should take him. If Daniels is there, they should take him. They should take either one of these guys. The beauty of being in the top three, you’re guaranteed one of the top tier quarterbacks. You have a guarantee and you don’t have to think that much about it. You sit there and wait and see who Washington takes and say, we’ll take the other guy. We will and we will make it work. That is also the place the Patriots are in, in that they have an opportunity to have a full start over. They can tailor their offense to whichever quarterback they get. They have that ability right now. We will build an offense around the guy we get. They can do it.
What stops them from doing that? Nothing. Not a damn thing. They’ve got tremendous flexibility right now that they have earned by being a total suck bag team. Congratulations. When that happens, you get a bit of a blank canvas to work with going forward. That’s what I would do. And I wouldn’t entertain trading down, and I wouldn’t entertain taking a wide receiver as good as he might end up being. I would take a quarterback. Because without it, you’re toast. You got nothing.
Tim McKone: I’m with Beetle. I think you have to go quarterback. You look at the Browns back in the day, they take Joe Thomas third overall hit on him. He’s a Hall of Fame player. They never had a quarterback so it was meaningless. You have a stud left tackle first ballot Hall of Famer and you don’t compete throughout his entire career because you never had a QB. So if you have an opportunity to go get one of those guys that could change the franchise, you have to do it.
Marc Bertrand: You can’t just put off finding your quarterback. Teams that have tried to put off finding the quarterback and didn’t keep taking swings at the quarterback position, typically don’t find the quarterback. They don’t typically get there.
