Beetle: Bill O’Brien is the best internal replacement for Bill Belichick
As rumors swirl about Bill Belichick‘s future, Beetle made it clear that Bill O’Brien is the best internal candidate to replace him.
You can’t trust Josh McDaniels…
Marc Bertrand: So if you’re sticking with someone internally. Why should it be Jerod Mayo as opposed to Bill O’Brien?
Scott Zolak: Why can’t it be Josh McDaniels?
Marc Bertrand: As head coach? Because he’s failed miserably twice. Billy O’Brien didn’t. If you had your choice between Bill O’Brien or Josh McDaniels for head coach, who would you pick?
Scott Zolak: I don’t know.
Marc Bertrand: Oh, please. Come on. Bill O’Brien in a landslide. I actually think Bill O’Brien makes for a better head coach in 2024 than he does offensive coordinator. Some of the offensive concepts of the Patriots system and what Bill O’Brien has adopted through all of his different stops over the years is not exactly innovative and new anymore. I mean, I think it’s falling by the wayside and it’s getting a little stale. But I think he can run a program. I think he can run a team.
I don’t think he needs to have that playsheet in his hand. He can let somebody else do it. And so I think of the internal candidates, Bill O’Brien is the best one they have and it at least gives you a guy who, you know, was able to run a team and not have it be a disaster. It wasn’t a disaster for him in Houston.
Scott Zolak: Did Bill really want Bill O’Brien or was that forced upon him?
Marc Bertrand: I don’t know. Maybe he didn’t. I think if Bill was left up to his own, you know, ways. He still has Joe Judge and Matt Patricia running the offense. So to some degree, this is not what he wanted, even if he likes Bill O’Brien. Right? He might like the guy. and respects him, but was not looking to put him back on his staff. That can all be true.
Scott Zolak: In the way the interview process was set-up… those other guys had no chance.
Marc Bertrand: You bring that up for a reason, though. Do you think that that’s because Bill O’Brien has direct line to ownership and maybe ownership keeps an eye on him in that regard? Like hey, Bill O’Brien could make for a good head coach and Bill O’Brien was rumored to be a guy that the Patriots would be interested in if Bill was about to leave after the Garoppolo trade.
Scott Zolak: Yeah, exactly. There’s some common interests here too, with O’Brien. Like wanted to get back to the area. Wife’s from here, likes it here. You know, better care here for his family. You know, parents age, all that stuff and what he’s dealing with there. Wants to be back in New England. Could be interesting if they decided to go that way.
