Celtics use final roster spot to add versatile defender
With less than two weeks to go until training camp opens, the Boston Celtics have officially filled out their roster. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the team has signed guard/forward Lamar Stevens to their 15th and final standard contract spot. The details of the contract were not immediately reported.
The Stevens signing doesn’t come out of nowhere for the Celtics. Last month he was one of two free agents to meet with the team, along with TJ Warren.

Stevens, 26, spent the last three seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he signed after going undrafted in 2020. Last year was his most involved season – he played 18.1 minutes per game, making 25 starts in 62 games. In that time he averaged 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 44.8 percent from the floor and 31.6 percent from three.
In particular, Stevens gave the Celtics trouble in the lone game he played against them last year. On March 6 he recorded eight points and eight rebounds, including six on the offensive end. He finished the game with a plus-18 on-court rating.

A defensive-first wing, Stevens could help replace the defensive edge lost by the departures of Marcus Smart and Grant Williams this offseason. He’ll likely compete for playing time behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown with players like Sam Hauser, Oshae Brissett, Dalano Banton, and rookie Jordan Walsh.
The Celtics are set to open training camp a week from Tuesday, on Oct. 3. Their preseason opener will be a few days later, when they host the Philadelphia 76ers that Sunday night at TD Garden. Coverage of that game can be heard on the 98.5 The Sports Hub Celtics Radio Network.
