Ime Udoka adds former Spurs assistant coach to Celtics staff
Shortly after the Celtics made Ime Udoka’s hire official on Monday morning, Udoka reportedly made his first hire as Celtics head coach. According to Jay King of The Athletic, Udoka will be adding Will Hardy to his staff in Boston.
Udoka and Hardy spent seven seasons together in San Antonio, working for Gregg Popovich. During that time, Hardy held a number of roles on top of being an assistant coach. He was the team’s video coordinator from 2013-2015, and was the head coach of the Spurs’ Summer League team from 2015-2018.
Hardy joined the Spurs directly out of college. He attended and played basketball at Williams College in Williamston, Massachusetts. As a senior in 2010, he was a part of an Ephs team that finished second in the nation at the Division-III level.
In recent years Hardy’s name has emerged as a favorite in NBA coaching circles – he even interviewed for the Knicks’ head coaching job last summer. So while he is a strong hire, there is a chance his stay in Boston could be a short one.
The Celtics’ coaching staff is likely to remain in flux over the next few weeks. Udoka could make more additions, and some of Brad Stevens’ former assistants may leave as well, with Scott Morrison having interviewed for the Washington Wizards’ vacant head coaching job last week.
