Bill Belichick’s Combine detour

Bill Belichick’s combine trip to Indianapolis this year included a stop in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Not because Murfreesboro was ranked the 19th best place to live by Money magazine in in 2018, or because he wanted to visit the famous Discovery Center Museum at Murfree Spring, but because there are no days off when it comes to scouting for the NFL Draft.
Tuesday night, the Middle Tennessee State University Football Twitter account shared pictures of Belichick attending a workout on their campus on Monday.

A few things to keep in mind when looking at this. First, this is not Middle Tennessee’s pro day. Those are held after the combine and usually involve multiple players. Second, Tyshun Render is hardly a blue chip prospect. That’s not to say he couldn’t be a good player at the NFL, but most major scouting websites don’t even have him on their boards. Render recorded 49 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 12 games as a redshirt senior for the Blue Raiders last year. Finally, the cherry on top, it’s pouring rain.
Bill Belichick has won six Super Bowls and is on the doorstep of becoming the winningest coach in NFL history. He turns 68 years old in April. Yet here he, while other scouts and coaches are getting in an early round of shrimp cocktail at St. Elmo’s, standing in the driving rain at an unofficial workout to scout a player who may never play a snap in the NFL.
He hardly looks like a guy ready to step away from the game.
