Toucher & Hardy: What Has Happened to The Patriots Defense?
On Wednesday’s edition of Toucher & Hardy, Mike Dussault who is a content producer for Patriots.com, joined the show. Dussault made the point that the Patriots defense has regressed due to some key injuries that the team sustained, but also due to the fact that the Patriots defensive line has failed to play cohesively with one another.
The Other Guys Around Them…They’ve Got to Be Better…”
Hardy: What’s wrong with this Patriots defense?
Mike Dussault:. Honestly, once (Matthew) Judon and (Christian) Barmore were gone, those were the team’s main pash rushers. But, you guys played the clip of Jerod Mayo as I was coming on. The troubling thing is just some of the fundamental stuff. It’s the basics. It’s the fundamentals. They need to be better up front. You can point a little bit to the injuries. But look, you point to the injuries on the offensive line, too. You saw some progress from them a couple of weeks ago from those guys who were filling in. Ja’Whaun Bentley was just a huge loss. He’s such a playmaker. He gets everybody on defense on the same page. He’s aggressive. He blows up runs. You saw it last week, the big runs that the defense allowed. It’s one thing to give up those big passing plays. To some extent those things are going to happen in the NFL. But the big running plays, those are the things that just are back breakers for teams, and that’s what they have to figure out up front. I do think that there’s some bright spots though. Davon Godchaux is playing well, Keion White’s having a little bit of a breakout year, but the other guys around them…they’ve got to be better. They’ve got to be more productive, and have to play together. I’m sure that’s exactly what we’re going to hear from DeMarcus Covington(Patriots defensive coordinator) tomorrow when we talk to him.
Wallach: Jacksonville is really bad. They’re a horrible team. They got embarrassed last week against Chicago. I think Buffalo beat them by five touchdowns. They’re 1-5, and despite all the deficiencies that the Patriots have, should they beat this team this weekend?
Mike Dussault: I point to the defense. I think defensively Jacksonville can be had. Now what does that mean with a rookie quarterback? I don’t even know what the offensive line is going to look like at this point. You might get a little bit of shootout vibes, but I’m not going to say that they should win. I think that they should be in this game and that their defense turns it around and plays better. But again, going back to Jacksonville, it’s a little bit of a cautionary tale. They’ve got a first round right tackle. They’ve got a second round left tackle. They went out and signed two free agent wide receivers. They have all these pieces. But I think Jacksonville also illustrates that it takes more than high draft picks to put a team together that can consistently win. So I’m interested to see how Drake Maye handles it all going overseas. It’ll be a new challenge for him. I don’t know if I’d say that they should win, but they should definitely be competitive. I just hope they can take some strides forward on offense, that the defense can step up.
