Zolak & Bertrand: Will the Patriots take a stand against Matt Judon?
On Monday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, we dive into whether the Patriots will take a stand against Matt Judon and his contract demands.
A trade is more likely than him getting paid…
Bertrand: I’m not sure there’s a happy ending here for Matthew Judon.
Zolak: They may take a stand here because Jahlani Tavai gets an extension.
Bertrand: How old is he?
Zolak: Young. He’s a good player.
Bertrand: Rhamondre Stevenson got an extension. How old is he? Third-year guy. Kyle Duggar was said to be too old, going into his second contract.
Zolak: Davon Godchaux wants more money now. I mean Josh Uche, who just redid his (contract), I think wants more money.
Bertrand: Kyle Dugger, too old. He is 28 years old. He’s four years younger. He just turned 28 in March. He’s four years younger, almost five years younger than Matthew Judon.
Zolak: See I think they’re looking at it, Dugger is going to be here, (Josh) Uche is going to be here, (Anfernee) Jennings is going to be here, Jahlani Tavai is going to be here.
Bertrand: Uche is not going to be here. They signed him to a one-year deal.
Zolak: I mean, Uche could be potentially move.
Bertrand: The guys who got real money are going to be here.
Zolak: They’re core guys.
Bertrand: Do they really have Matthew Judon in their plans? Do they have Davon Godchaux on their plans long term?
Zolak: Probably not because the money keeps going up.
Bertrand: And those two guys haven’t been paid. All those other guys they’ve paid, whether or not they produce at all on their contracts is a different story, but they have expectations that they will be part of a core of this team going forward for the next three or four years. They have no expectation that Matthew Judon will be part of that for three or four more years. He’s 32. He’s a 32-year-old guy coming off a torn biceps. He’s 32 and in his two healthy years here, he couldn’t really finish the season playing at the same level he was earlier in the year.
Zolak: Do you think they’re open to giving him a small bump this year without doing a long-term extension?
Bertrand: No, here’s what I would say. What are they more open to, trading him or giving him more money?
Zolak: Probably A.
McKone: Yeah, trading him.
Bertrand: And that’s why, when I read it, I thought if that second tweet is him sort of referencing and cryptically telling you he may no longer be a Patriot. I really don’t think it meant that. But if it did, if you think that’s the case, I don’t think it’s because he wants out. I think you’re right, Zo. He wants to be here. I think it might be because he knows they’re looking to move him.
