Patriots claim rookie linebacker off waivers
The New England Patriots made a pair of roster moves on Tuesday, including signing rookie linebacker Steele Chambers off waivers.
Ahead of their final practice of minicamp on Wednesday, the New England Patriots made a pair of roster moves on Tuesday. They ended up swapping one rookie linebacker for another.
The incoming rookie linebacker is Steele Chambers, who the Patriots claimed off waivers from the Detroit Lions. Chambers initially signed with the Lions as a UDFA after the NFL Draft back in April, but then was waived by Detroit on Tuesday.
Chambers, 23, was a three year starter at linebacker at Ohio State (after beginning his career as a running back). In 13 games last year the 6-foot-1, 229-pound linebacker recorded 83 tackles, and landed third-team All-Big Ten honors. Chambers was a participant in this year’s Shrine Bowl and was invited to the NFL Combine and was expected by some to be a late-round draft pick.
In New England, Chambers will compete for a depth spot in a deep linebacker group. His best bet at landing a roster or practice squad spot will be proving he can be a contributor on special teams.
To make room for Chambers on the roster the Patriots released linebacker Jay Person, who they signed as an undrafted rookie after he was with the team on a tryout basis for rookie minicamp. Person played his college football at Chattanooga. With those moves, the Patriots’ roster remains full at 90 players.
The Patriots will be back on the practice field on Wednesday for their final practice of minicamp. After that, the team will be off until training camp in late July.
